In addition to being consumed at festivals, house parties, and clubs, MDMA is frequently regarded as the drug of choice in the rave community. The sensory effects of music and lighting in a rave setting frequently work in very synergistic ways with the drug. When used in a rave environment, MDMA’s psychedelic amphetamine properties provide a number of attractive features for users. Because the drug reduces inhibition, some users enjoy the feeling of mass communion; others use it as party fuel because of its stimulatory effects. Compared to other stimulants, MDMA is used less frequently—usually less than once a week.

MDMA is occasionally used in combination with other psychoactive substances like ketamine, 2C-B, psilocybin mushrooms, and LSD. We call this combination “candy-flipping” when it involves LSD. Alcohol, methamphetamine, and prescription medications like SSRIs are frequently administered together with MDMA, which can cause a number of drug interactions. There have been three reports of potentially fatal cases of MDMA co-administration with ritonavir; ritonavir has been shown to have serious and hazardous drug-drug interactions with a variety of psychoactive, anti-psychotic, and non-psychoactive medications.
